Lies Pop Culture Tells Us – Pastor Brad Hill

I started what will be a short series on spiritual warfare in the last Pacesetter. In it, I stated that Satan was a liar and the father of lies. What lies does he tell us? How does he communicate these lies? I came across these 7 lies that American pop culture tells us…what is the spiritual origin of these lies?

1.) Santa Claus Theology (If I am good, God will bless my life.)
2.) Steve Jobs Theology (If I work hard, I can do anything.)
3.) Oprah Theology (God wants me to be happy.)
4.) Gated Neighborhood Theology (God wants me to be safe and comfortable.)
5.) McDonalds Theology (God won’t give me more than I can handle.)
6.) Broadway Theology (I must put on a costume and act like I have it together.)
7.) Chess Theology (God is a blend of strategy, knowledge, and rules.)

Culture has the potential to shape how we see God. We must pray for discernment and constantly assess culture in light of God’s nature through God’s word. Cultures are shaky and fickle. God is constant and never-changing. God will reveal himself to us if we seek him (Matt. 7:7). Let’s be people who seek God daily.

The fundamental lie to all of this is that we might be tempted to believe that God is withholding His best, His goodness, from us, that there is a good we can have if we just reach out and grab for it.

Just as Jesus combatted the lies of Satan during His temptations with scripture, so can we. Romans 12:2 commands us, “Do not be conformed to this word but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect!”
